Let’s Talk About the 400VAC Shortwave Halogen Heater
We built these 354mm quartz lamps for one reason: to get things hot, and to do it fast. They use shortwave infrared radiation. If you’re not a physics nerd, here is what that actually means for you: the heat doesn’t waste time warming up the air in your shop. It goes straight into the material. It’s an aggressive, penetrating kind of heat. Why 400V? You might wonder why we run these at 400VAC instead of the usual 230V. It comes down to the plumbing of your power grid. By bumping the voltage up to 400V for that 1000W output, we keep the current draw low. This is a huge win for your setup. You can use thinner wires and you don’t have to worry nearly as much about voltage dropping off when you’re running long cables across a massive oven array. Plus, packing 1000W into a 354mm length gives you a really tight, concentrated heating zone. The Magic Inside the Tube Inside that high-purity quartz is a mix of halogen gas. Think of this gas as a bodyguard for the tungsten filament. Usually, high heat makes tungsten evaporate, which is why cheap bulbs burn out. But with the halogen cycle, that tungsten actually gets pushed back onto the filament. It keeps the lamp alive much longer, even when you’re pushing it hard. Just a tip: these usually go into R7s or similar heavy-duty sockets. You need that because the quartz expands when it gets hot, and a flimsy socket just won’t cut it. Real-World Use (And some warnings) These are the go-to for PET blowing, plastic welding, and those rapid curing lines where every second counts. They hit your target temp almost instantly. But look, there’s a catch. A 1000W shortwave tube creates an intense amount of localized heat. If your reflector is dirty or pitted, you’re basically throwing money away because your heat throw will tank. And please, double-check your cooling fans. If the ends of the lamp overheat, you’ll fry the quartz seals and the whole thing will die early. Keep them cool, keep your reflectors clean, and these things will work like a charm.
