Stop Waiting on Your Oven: A Better Way to Cure Carbon Fiber
Curing high-end carbon fiber is always a bit of a balancing act. You need enough heat to get the job done, but if you just blast it, you end up with the “skin effect”—where the surface is scorched to a crisp while the core is still wet. It’s frustrating and wasteful. That’s why we do things differently with our shortwave IR lamps. We design them to hit that resin activation temperature fast and deep, so the whole part cures evenly. Getting the heat where it actually matters To really speed things up, we focus on the wattage-to-length ratio. By packing more power into a shorter quartz tube, we create a concentrated beam of energy. Instead of just heating the air around the part, the energy actually punches through the carbon weave. It saves you a ton of time. We can build these to fit whatever voltage you’re already running. If you’ve got a high-voltage setup, we’ll tune the filament so it stays stable and doesn’t burn out early. One heads-up, though: these lamps pull a lot of power. Make sure your transformers can handle that initial surge when you flip the switch, or you’ll be spending your morning resetting breakers. The nitty-gritty on materials We use high-purity quartz glass because it lets the IR energy pass through without getting stuck. But since carbon fiber can be reflective, we often add specific coatings to the lamps. This makes sure the resin absorbs the heat, rather than the carbon filaments just bouncing it back. And because nobody likes spending hours soldering wires in a cramped machine, we use standard connectors like R7s or Sk15. You just plug them in and get back to work. Bringing it to the shop floor If you’re still relying on slow oven curing, this is a breath of fresh air. You’re talking about minutes instead of hours. The only catch? You have to be precise with your spacing. Since the focal point is narrow, distance is everything. Too close and you’ll scorch the composite. Too far and you lose that speed you were looking for. Once you find that sweet spot, though, it’s a total shift in how your day flows.
